The API Fellowships Program offers two (2) categories of Fellowships: API Senior Fellowships and API Fellowships. The categorization is based essentially on the age of the applicant.

The API Senior Fellowships are meant for those with an established track record as a public intellectual and who are at least 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2009. The project may be carried out for a minimum of one (1) month to a maximum of twelve (12) months. Up to four (4) API Participating Countries may be visited.

In addition to the general eligibility above, the applicants for the API Senior Fellowships must:
- Be 40 years of age or more as of August 31, 2009 (exceptions may be made);

- Have the ability and experience to conduct research projects and/or professional activities in the Participating Countries other than the applicant's native country or country of residence;

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities in up to four (4) of the Participating Countries, but in a country(ies) other than the applicant's native country or country of residence;

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities for a continuous period of between one (1) and twelve (12) months (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); and

- Have the ability, influence, and means to disseminate the results of their research projects and/or professional activities.

The API Fellowships are for those under 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2009. The project may be carried out for a minimum of four (4) months to a maximum of twelve (12) months. Up to two (2) API Participating Countries may be visited.

In addition to the general eligibility above, the applicants for the API Fellowships must:

- Be under the age of 40 as of August 31, 2009 (exceptions may be made);

- Have the ability and desire to engage in research projects and/or professional activitites in the Participating Countries other than the applicant's native or country of residence;

- Have a strong potential to contribute to their field in the future; - Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities for a consecutive period of between four (4) and twelve (12) months (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); and

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities in up to two (2) of the Participating Countries, but in a country(ies) other than the applicant's native country or country of residernce.

What are commitments involved?
After the project year, you must attend the annual API Regional Workshop, which usually takes place in November (for applicants for Fellows Year 2010-2011, it will be in November 2011), and present your results by submitting the papers and other materials. You are strongly encouraged to disseminate the results of your project to a wider audience wherever possible.

By fulfilling your commitments, you will become a member of the API Community. You will be expected to participate in the activities of the Community, and will have the chance to apply for post fellowship programs.

What is the API Community?
The API Community is consisted of all past and current recipients of an API Fellowship, and everyone involved in the API Fellowships Program as selection members, program directors, and coordinators. This growing community now members more than 250 persons of varied backgrounds but with a shared commitment. Members meet at national and cross-country functions, as well as through informal networks and collaborative projects at a national and regional level.

What does the API Fellowships Program provide?
- A stipend and housing allowance for the time spent overseas on the project, the amount varies by country;

- International transportation costs, for one round trip only;

- Domestic transportation allowance;

- Research allowance to cover computer costs, field expences, books, tranlation fees, etc.; and

- Travel insurance during the fellowship period.

How are API Fellows chosen?
In each Participating Country, there is a selection committee comprised of established public intellectuals. This committee evaluates all the applications, invites a shortlist for interview, and sends its recommendations to an International Selection Committee which makes the final choice. There are a maximum of six Fellowships for each country per year. The selection procedure is confidential.

What is timing?
- The deadline for application submission is August 31, 2009.

- Interviews will take place in September/October/November 2009.

- The results will be announced in February 2010.

- The project must be carried out between July 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

# Why do you want to carry out this project?
# Why are you the right person to do this project?
(mention relevant previous experience.)
# How are you going to do it? (methodology)
# What will be the outputs (research paper, video, performance, etc.) and how will you disseminate it?
# How does the project contribute to the goal of API?
# What are your past achievements and future plans as a public intellectual? (organization, advocacy, publication, etc.) How will this Fellowship help you?

Who is eligible?
Citizens of developing member countries of the Bank (see olarship_program.shtml#sel”>list and selection criteria below) who have a minimum of two years’ working experience and who are eligible for admission to the following degree programs at the University of Sydney:

Conditions
To be considered for an ADB-JSP scholarship you must:

Benefits

Selection criteria
• Qualifications of the candidate.

• The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who have previously studied abroad.
• The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who are pursuing a second master’s degree or a second doctorate degree.

• Diversification of nationality in the overall Program as well as at each participating academic institution will be considered.
Duration of scholarship
The scholarship period is one year. An appropriate extension for the second or third year of study is conditional on the scholar’s maintaining a satisfactory level of performance determined by the University of Sydney and following approval by the ADB.
Total number of scholarships
Scholarships are awarded, each year, as vacancies arise following completion of studies or withdrawal of scholars. Less than three ADB-JSP scholarships may be awarded in each round of application.

Competition for an ADB-JSP scholarship is extremely strong. Only candidates who receive an unconditional offer of admission will be considered for the ADB-JSP scholarship.

AMINEF is pleased to announce the availability of Fulbright scholarships to study in the United States for the 2009 â€“ 2010 academic year.
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State is pleased to announce the Community College Summit Initiative Program.

The Community College Summit Initiative Program will provide funding for round-trip airfare to the U.S.; a living allowance during English language, academic, and practical training program components; tuition costs; a health benefit plan; and cultural enhancement activities. Students will be hosted in groups by community colleges competitively selected to participate in the program. Programs may be one or two years in duration and may result in either a certificate or an Associate Degree. Students are required to return home at the end of their program and may not transfer to a four-year U.S. academic institution.

Eligible fields:
1. Agriculture
2. Applied Engineering
3. Business Management and Administration; Health Professions, including Nursing; Information Technology; Media; and Tourism and Hospitality Management.

To apply to the program, candidates must:
â€¢ Have completed a secondary school education;
â€¢ Have relevant work experience in the field in which they are applying;

The American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF) annually offers Fulbright scholarships to study in the United States. With a munificent benefaction from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Cambridge Trust has established, with effect from October 2001, a scheme of Gates Cambridge Scholarships for scholars of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from every country of the world (excluding the United Kingdom), who are committed to serving their communities, and who gain admission to the University of Cambridge. Since 2001, the Gates Cambridge Trust has supported 620 Scholars from 78 countries.

The Gates Cambridge Trust intends to offer a substantial number of awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge for the following courses of study:

* Research leading to the degree of PhD
* One-year postgraduate courses of study

Job Description
As a PhD student you will be investigating neurocognitive mechanisms. Visual appearance is an increasingly important factor in the distress experienced by many individuals around the world who fail to meet the beauty standard and body image they have set for themselves. An important factor in this increasing striving for beauty and slimness is the continuous presentation of models with unrealistic, retouched or “photoshopped” features, which represent an unattainable goal for most individuals. The current project is aimed at understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms through which beauty ideals shape the appraisal of our own bodies and those of others, and why some individuals develop body image disturbances while others remain unaffected. Effects of media on body image will be investigated for old and new virtual media (e.g., looking at effects of real and computer generated models), using a variety of experimental techniques (eye-tracking, ERPs, behaviour, fRMI). The PhD student will participate in the graduate program of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), present and publish findings at international conferences and peer reviewed quality journals, and combine scientific findings in a doctoral thesis.

DAAD-Scholarships for Selected Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries 2009-2010 is provided by The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) – supports a range of postgraduate courses at German universities which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from Developing Countries (including Indonesia) with further specialised studies.
University graduates who have been working for two years in the public or private sector in technical, economical or agricultural fields, in education or development planning are eligible for these grants. The 42 courses differ in respect to fields of study, language and entry requirements. The age limit for the courses is 32 for Doctoral and 36 years for Master programme.

The funds for these scholarships are provided by the Federal Ministry for Economics Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Due to the limited number of DAAD scholarships for its courses, not all applicants accepted for studies by the German universities can be supported. Therefore, institutions are also encouraged to nominate candidates, whose studies they are willing to finance out of their staff development budget. In this case, an accompanying letter with according statements is necessary for the applicant.
The DAAD supports these selected programmes with a certain quota of scholarships and with financial assistance for a special tutoring system. At the end of the course (programmes run 12 to 36 months, depending on the particular institution) participants can obtain an internationally recognized Master’s or in some courses PhD degree.

Target group: Professionals holding an academic degree and with at least two years of experience in the public or private sector in technical, economical, or agricultural fields, in education or development planning.

PhD Scholarship to Study in the Auckland Volcanic Field image

The School of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, invites applications from outstanding students to fill three fully-funded 3-yr PhD positions to study the Auckland Volcanic Field, North Island, New Zealand. These PhD research projects form key components of a major, multi-year integrated research programme with the long-term aim of determining volcanic risk in Auckland.
The Auckland Volcanic Field is a small-scale monogenetic intra-plate basaltic system that has produced about 50 small centres in the form of tuff rings, maars, cinder cones and associated lava flows during its estimated 250 kyr lifetime. The most recent eruption was about 700 years ago, and the field is still considered potentially active.

PhD projects available:

1. Petrology of the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF)
The volcanology, mineralogy and geochemistry of the AVF has been generally described and this project will focus on detailed studies (mineral chemistry, melt inclusions, isotopes, trace element modelling) which will lead to an understanding of how the mantle yields small scale melts and how these melts become modified during their rise to the surface. The successful applicant will have an interest in volcanic rocks, mineralogy and geochemistry; an ability to apply mathematical models will be an advantage. He or she will be expected to work closely with the PhD candidate working on the complementary project investigating physical controls of monogenetic volcanism.

2. Physical controls on monogenetic basaltic volcanism
This project focuses on developing a quantitative understanding of the physical controls on monogenetic basaltic volcanism. The focus will be on the Auckland Volcanic Field, but suitable ancient analogues will also be targeted. The successful candidate will undertake field investigations to improve the current structural and tectonic model for the Auckland volcanic Field, and determine the relationship, if any, between tectonics and volcanism in this region. From a strong foundation in field observation, the candidate will formulate models for the transport of magma through the crust and test these using numerical simulations. This project provides an opportunity to produce innovative insights into how monogenetic volcanism evolves and varies in both time and space. Applicants for this PhD project should have a strong foundation in structural geology, tectonics and volcanology, and a high level of numeracy. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the PhD candidate working on the complementary project investigating the petrology of the Auckland Volcanic Field.

3. Quaternary crypto-tephra study of sediments in Auckland maars
Auckland Volcanic Field maars contain excellent sequences of laminated lake sediments with numerous tephra layers from local and distant volcanoes, spanning the last 50,000 years. A candidate is needed to construct a tephrostratigraphic record of ash fall based on crypto-tephra (microscopic ash) layers. The purpose is to assess the past frequency and sources of ash fall in Auckland for hazard analysis. The project will involve the extraction and geochemical analysis of glass shards from sediment cores. A background in lake sediment cores; micro-geochemical analysis or tephra studies could be an advantage, but is not required.

Get Prepared:

Get letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselor or leaders in your community. Choose these wisely (make copies).

Get a copy of your high school or college transcript (make copies).

Get involved in your community or in school activities or in your church. If your time is limited due to personal circumstances, working to help with family expenses is also an advantage.

Start writing an essay about your goals and what you have done to date to achieve them. Think about what makes you unique.

Get a picture of yourself. A school picture is perfect. Anything smaller than a wallet size head shot, will do.

Buy some clear plastic binders.

The goal here is to have numerous packages made up ahead of time, ready to submit to the various scholarship committees.
The package will include:

Australia PhD Scholarships for Research in Indonesia on Community, Environment and Local Governance Issues. Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and local governance issues.

The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren (Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled `Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia`. The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on environmental issues in the context of conservation and development programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity and sustainability outcomes.

The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision determined by the focus and site of each student`s component of the project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research, while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building, conservation and development projects are being conducted.

Essential criteria include:
* a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a relevant social science field
* advanced fluency in Indonesian language
* field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience
* ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Repayment Plans for Federal education loans

There are four main repayment plans for Federal education loans, consisting of Standard Repayment and three alternatives. Each of the alternatives has a lower monthly payment than Standard Repayment, but this extends the term of the loan and increases the total amount of interest repaid over the lifetime of the loan.

Types of Repayment Plans

The repayment plans are as follows:

* Standard Repayment. Under this plan you will pay a fixed monthly amount for a loan term of up to 10 years. Depending on the amount of the loan, the loan term may be shorter than 10 years. There is a $50 minimum monthly payment.

* Extended Repayment. This plan is like standard repayment, but allows a loan term of 12 to 30 years, depending on the total amount borrowed. Stretching out the payments over a longer term reduces the size of each payment, but increases the total amount repaid over the lifetime of the loan.

* Graduated Repayment. Unlike the standard and extended repayment plans, this plan starts off with lower payments, which gradually increase every two years. The loan term is 12 to 30 years, depending on the total amount borrowed. The monthly payment can be no less than 50% and no more than 150% of the monthly payment under the standard repayment plan. The monthly payment must be at least the interest that accrues, and must also be at least $25.

* Income-Contingent Repayment. Payments under the income contingent repayment plan are based on the borrower's income and the total amount of debt. Monthly payments are adjusted each year as the borrower's income changes. The loan term is up to 25 years. At the end of 25 years, any remaining balance on the loan will be discharged. The write-off of the remaining balance at the end of 25 years is taxable under current law. There is a $5 minimum monthly payment. Income Contingent Repayment is available only for Direct Loan borrowers.

* Income-Sensitive Repayment. As an alternative to income contingent repayment, FFELP lenders offer borrowers income-sensitive repayment, which pegs the monthly payments to a percentage of gross monthly income. The loan term is 10 years.

* Income-Based Repayment. The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 introduced income-based repayment as a more generous alternative to income-sensitive and income-contingent repayment, starting on July 1, 2009. Unlike income-contingent repayment and income-sensitive repayment, it is available in both the Direct Loan and FFELP programs. Income-based repayment is like income contingent repayment, but caps the monthly payments at a lower percentage of a narrower definition of discretionary income.

All six plans are available for student loans, but only the first three plans are available for parent loans.

Private student loans cannot, in general, be consolidated with federal student loans. The low interest rates on federal consolidation loans are not available to private education loans. Nevertheless, there are several options for refinancing private education loans.

Since most private education loans do not compete on price, a private consolidation loans is merely replacing one or more private education loans with another. So the main benefit of such a consolidation is obtaining a single monthly payment. Also, since the consolidation resets the term of the loan, this may reduce the monthly payment (at a cost, of course, of increasing the total interest paid over the lifetime of the loan).

However, since the interest rates on private student loans are based on your credit score, you may be able to get a lower interest rate through a private consolidation loan if your credit score has improved significantly since you first obtained the loan. For example, if you've graduated and now have a good job and have been building a good credit history, your credit score may have improved. If your credit score has increased by 50-100 points or more, you may be able to get a lower interest rate by consolidating your debt with another lender. You can also try talking to the current holder of your loans, to see if they'll reduce the interest rate on your loans rather than lose your loans to another lender.

- Cabinet gives approval to Fulbright programme

The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to an agreement that will double the number of scholars exchanged with the United States of America under the Fulbright Educational exchange programme.

It has also rechristened the programme to Fulbright-Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships and Grants.

Officials said the agreement provides for the creation of the 'US India Educational Foundation' awarding ‘Fulbright Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships and Grants'. Initially about 240 students from India and a similar number from the USA will be sponsored annually under the programme.

The scholarships are given with financial contribution by the Government of India. The Cabinet's approval to the revised draft agreement would also provide equal participation of Government of India in policy and decision-making on the exchange of Indian and US scholars through equal participation in the board of the US-India Education Foundation.

Officials said that the move would serve Government of India's objectives of supporting and encouraging Indian studies, research, instruction and other educational activities for US citizens and nationals in India and Indian citizens and nationals in US schools. "The progamme encourages exchanges between American academics and Indian universities. Host institutions and organisations on both sides would have the opportunity to develop the desired linkages," officials said.

The Fulbright programme is also intended to support (with support to research and capacity building), the India-US bilateral initiatives of 2005-06 in agriculture, clean energy, climate change, science and technology, global issues of common concern etc, they said.

- Local students selected for AFS Scholarships

Humboldt Beacon

The AFS Intercultural Programs Northwest Area Team recently announced that three local students have been selected to receive scholarships for their international exchange programs.

The students selected are Kira Tangney of Arcata who will go to the Dominican Republic for one year, Pavlina Crawley of Kneeland who will go to Ecuador for one year and Rose Southard of McKinleyville who will spend one year in Egypt.

The scholarship money was raised locally and the selected students are expected to return to their community following their exchange to share their experiences and support other exchange students.

AFS-USA has been working toward a more just and peaceful world for over 60 years by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global partnership that includes thousands of volunteers.

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for 19 PhD fellowships starting 1 February 2009 or 1 September 2009 for a period of up to three years in the following subject areas:

Applicants need to hold a Master’s degree or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by January 31, 2009. Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master’s programme.

Applicants with a foreign Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by CIRIUS to establish, if the Master’s degree of the applicant is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree. More information about CIRIUS is available at: http://www.studyindenmark.dk

The requirement for the equivalent of a Danish Master’s degree is stipulated in the relevant agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) (pdf)

Employment as a PhD fellow shall occur pursuant to the applicable rules of the University of Copenhagen and the Faculty, as well as the relevant agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Under this agreement, the PhD fellow is obliged – without further remuneration – to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract.

Applications must be submitted on the appropriate form, which also stipulates the appropriate enclosures to attach. Do not submit written work. The assessment committee will request copies if deemed necessary.

The Department of Electrical Engineering of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science comprises of 250 faculty staff and app. 500 students. It offers a BSc programme in Electrical Engineering and an MSc programme in Electrical Engineering with 5 specialisations (Microsystems and Microelectronics, Measurement and Control Engineering, Telecommunication Networks, Biomedical Engineering and Embedded Systems) and contributes to the MSc programmes of Mechatronics and Nanotechnology. Research is directed toward signal processing, transmission and storage. The Department is characterized by a large number of contacts with government institutions, European Union and industry.

- International scholarships

75 University of Brighton international scholarships worth a reduction of £2,000 off the cost of your tuition fees for each year of your course are available to outstanding new, full-time international undergraduate and postgraduate taught degree students. In 2007-8 students from over twenty five different countries received our scholarships.
Criteria

The criteria for awarding University of Brighton international scholarships are primarily merit-based.
Merit does not necessarily have to mean academic merit but could also be interpreted to include outstanding performance in a variety of spheres.
The strongest candidates will be those demonstrating a mixture of academic merit (including English language ability) and other merit or outstanding achievement in a particular field of activity.
You will also need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to pay the remainder of the fees.
Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must be a new, full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree international student with a minimum course duration of 1 year, and must have applied for the course of your choice at the University of Brighton, and have been offered a place on that course for 2008 entry.

Students studying foundation degrees or undergraduate degrees at University of Brighton partner colleges are not eligible for these awards. Existing international students are not eligible unless starting a new undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

Deadline for application

Requests for scholarship application forms will be considered from 1 October 2007 for 2008 entry. The deadline for receiving scholarship applications back is 31 July 2008. Before that date, applications will be processed on a monthly quota basis once a scholarship application pack has been received by the university. Decisions about successful scholarship awards will be processed by the individual faculties, but will be administered centrally by the International Office, Registry. You are advised to apply as early as possible after you have received our offer, as the number of scholarships is limited. Please note any accompanying documentation will not be returned.
