USA. Brunswick increases number of scholarships awarded to children of Brunswick Dealership employees

Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) and the Brunswick Foundation recently awarded $56,000 in scholarships to assist with college tuition fees to 28 sons and daughters of employees of dealers who participate in Brunswick Dealer Advantage. The number of awards increased from last year to accommodate expansion of Brunswick Dealer Advantage, which in addition to qualifying marine dealers in the United States also includes Brunswick marine dealers in Canada as well as Brunswick Billiards dealers and Life Fitness dealers in both countries.

Students eligible for scholarships included those whose parent(s) are employees of dealerships that sell qualified Brunswick brands and participate as Gold or Platinum dealers in Brunswick Dealer Advantage. In addition to the scholarship program, Brunswick Dealer Advantage offers a range of benefits and services designed to address the operational, customer and employee needs of independent Brunswick dealers.

"In the wake of rising college tuition, I am truly appreciative for the opportunity to apply and receive a Brunswick scholarship,” said scholarship recipient Annie McCarthy. Annie’s family has owned and operated McCarthy’s Marine in Brielle, N.J., for more than 60 years. “I encourage all eligible students to partake in this advantage. I would like to thank Brunswick for their continued support of their dealers and employees in the pursuit of higher education.”

Scholarships were awarded based on the applicant's academic record and leadership abilities as demonstrated by extracurricular activities. The $2,000 scholarships apply toward achievement of baccalaureate degrees.

“Brunswick is committed to helping its dealers and their families realize their dreams,” said Russ Lockridge, vice president and chief human resources officer for Brunswick Corporation.

“For more than 50 years, the Brunswick Foundation has contributed to the charitable interests of its employees and the communities in which they live,” said Adrian Sakowicz, president of the Brunswick Foundation as well as Brunswick’s vice president - strategic partnerships. “Our contribution to the Dealer Sons and Daughters scholarship program helps prepare our next generation of leaders.”

Scholarship recipients were selected by an impartial, external committee comprised of academic professionals from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind., and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis.

Ph.D Scholarship in Computer Science

The Expertise centre for Digital Media is a research institute of Hasselt University in Belgium. The research team of about 80 people performs scientific research in 3 areas: computer graphics, human-computer interaction and multimedia & communication technology. Hasselt University calls for candidates for the following vacant position (m/f) in EDM:

PhD Scholarship in computer science (2 x 2 jaar)

Scholarship description:
The intended research is situated in the domains of networked virtual environments (NVE) and human-computer interaction (HCI). More specifically, synchronization in scalable networked virtual environments is studied, supporting simulation-based interaction. The investigated synchronization techniques enhance consistency of the status of the virtual environment as presented to all users. Heterogeneous environments (different platforms, I/O devices etc.) are taken into account. Besides synchronization techniques, interaction techniques and the flexibility in their realization play an important role in the envisioned research. Usable multimodal interaction metaphors are designed for individuals as well as groups of users. A division of the users in subgroups is considered for both simulation and interaction between several users in order to enhance performance and social interaction. Further details of the PhD research topics will be determined based on the background and interest of the PhD candidate.

Diploma :
Academic license (4 years), master (5 years) or equivalent diploma in computer science. Students who will complete their studies during the summer, are strongly invited to apply.

PhD scholarship for Body Image and Media Students

PhD student for Body Image & Media, Nijmegen, (Gelderland), 32 hours per week Radboud University Nijmegen

Job Description
As a PhD student you will be investigating neurocognitive mechanisms. Visual appearance is an increasingly important factor in the distress experienced by many individuals around the world who fail to meet the beauty standard and body image they have set for themselves. An important factor in this increasing striving for beauty and slimness is the continuous presentation of models with unrealistic, retouched or “photoshopped” features, which represent an unattainable goal for most individuals. The current project is aimed at understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms through which beauty ideals shape the appraisal of our own bodies and those of others, and why some individuals develop body image disturbances while others remain unaffected. Effects of media on body image will be investigated for old and new virtual media (e.g., looking at effects of real and computer generated models), using a variety of experimental techniques (eye-tracking, ERPs, behaviour, fRMI). The PhD student will participate in the graduate program of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), present and publish findings at international conferences and peer reviewed quality journals, and combine scientific findings in a doctoral thesis.

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000

Maximum salary amount in Euro’s a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract:
Maximum hours per week: 32

Additional conditions of employment:
The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student (0,8 FTE) for a period of five years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 3½ years.

Requirements
Doctorate
Candidates need a Master’s degree in Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Social Psychology, or a related field, and should show a sincere interest in the study of body image and media. A background and experience in conducting psychological experiments (using behaviour, EEG, eye-tracking, and/or neuroimaging techniques) and enrolment in a Research Master’s programme (Behavioural Science or Cognitive Neuroscience or related) are considered an advantage. Candidates need to be proficient in English and must have excellent writing ability.

Organization
Radboud University Nijmegen Faculty of Social Sciences
Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful green campus in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities.
The Behavioural Science Institute studies individual human behaviour as a function of its social and physical contexts. The central goal of the institute is to gain fundamental insight into the causal factors and regulatory processes that govern individual human behaviour. The BSI is an interdisciplinary endeavour aimed at exploring the aetiology of individual human behaviour. The PhD student will participate in the Media and Behaviour Lab group which involves a collaboration between Social Cognition and Developmental Psychopathology programmes of the BSI. The BSI is equipped with extensive lab facilities including eye tracking, EEG, and virtual reality, and has access to neuroimaging facilities (e.g. fMRI) at the F.C.
