From Publishers Weekly
While still in high school, Ben Kaplan won more than two dozen merit-based scholarships amounting to more than $90,000 in funds for use at any school. After graduating from Harvard magna cum laude in 2001, he self-published How to Go to College Almost for Free: The Secrets of Winning Scholarship Money, selling more than 65,000 copies out of a custom tour bus dedicated to raising awareness about scholarships. Now reissued, his book offers advice on how to find and win money for college, delivered in an energetic and inspiring voice with broad appeal.

From Booklist
Kaplan parlayed intelligence, hard work, and creativity into $90,000 of scholarship money, then graduated from Harvard to write a book designed to help others negotiate their way to unencumbered college cash. His guide, self-published in 2000 by Waggle Dancer Press, is now available, totally revised and updated, in this trade paperback edition. Although loosely organized and sometimes repetitive, the book is filled with useful information, beginning with the happy news that merit awards aren't the sole province of gifted athletes and top students. There's also plenty on how scholarships affect college-aid packages, locating and applying for coveted cash, and even handling telephone interviews. Scattered throughout are references to awards and Web sites, including Kaplan's own. Stephanie Zvirin

Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate

Description
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

Ernest L. Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered offers a new paradigm that recognizes the full range of scholarly activity by college and university faculty and questions the existence of a reward system that pushed faculty toward research and publication and away from teaching.

From the Inside Flap
"Throughout the country, educators and their critics are renewing the old debate over the faculty's preoccupation with research and its effects on the quality of teaching. On one campus after another, there are stirrings that seem to presage a willingness to think afresh about the criteria that determine tenure and measure the success of faculty careers. Scholarship Reconsidered speaks directly to these issues and should enrich a growing debate that may have important consequences for higher education."—Derek Bok, Harvard University" Scholarship Reconsidered is a thoughtful and welcome addition to a growing conversation about teaching and research in the nation's universities. That conversation too readily evokes a dichotomous relation between two activities, one entailing the production of new knowledge and the other the dissemination of the old. This report from the Carnegie Foundation will, I hope, begin the long task of dispelling this polarity."—Donald Kennedy, Stanford University" Scholarship Reconsidered will provide a vital contribution to improved undergraduate instruction through its recognition of the necessary contribution of ?scholarship teaching.' The report accurately describes the dependence of collegiate instruction on scholarship in a manner which appreciate the strengths of American higher education and shows how to use these strengths to improve it."—Ernst Benjamin, American Association of University Professors" Scholarship Reconsidered is wise and sensible, a welcome constellation of virtues. It will be a greatly influential guide to people who care about teaching and learning in the United States today."—Catherine R. Stimpson, RutgersIn this groundbreaking study, Ernest L. Boyer offers a new paradigm that recognizes the full range of scholarly activity by college and university faculty. He suggests that four general areas of Andeavor be viewed as scholarship: discovery, integration of knowledge, teaching, and serv

Engaged Scholarship: A Guide for Organizational and Social Research

Engaged Scholarship: A Guide for Organizational and Social Research

The relationship between theory and practice, research and action, is fundamental to all fields of applied social science. Should research findings and knowledge be useful for science, practice, and policy? If so, how should such research be designed, carried out and disseminated to achieve the twin goals of rigor and relevance? These challenges are particularly relevant in the applied areas of management and organization studies where there is a distinct responsibility for researchers to engage with the "real world".

In this carefully crafted and thoughtful book, leading management researcher Andrew Van de Ven both presents the broad intellectual challenge of "engaged scholarship", and also sets out a clear framework and guidelines for carrying out soundly based and useful research for advancing both science and practice.
At a time when some may question the value and status of academic knowledge; and others, contrastingly, urge a closer relationship between researchers and research users--be they businesses, governments or other institutions--the challenge of engaged scholarship is as relevant as ever, and there is a real need for the thoughtful and considered approach offered by Van de Ven. The book both provides a manifesto for engaged scholarship in the social sciences, and clear framework for research design and methodology. It will be an invaluable reference point and guide for academics, researchers and graduate students across the social sciences concerned with rigorous and relevant research in the contemporary world.

Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet

Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet

Description
Scholars in all fields now have access to an unprecedented wealth of online information, tools, and services. The Internet lies at the core of an information infrastructure for distributed, data-intensive, and collaborative research. Although much attention has been paid to the new technologies making this possible, from digitized books to sensor networks, it is the underlying social and policy changes that will have the most lasting effect on the scholarly enterprise. In Scholarship in the Digital Age, Christine Borgman explores the technical, social, legal, and economic aspects of the kind of infrastructure that we should be building for scholarly research in the twenty-first century.

Borgman describes the roles that information technology plays at every stage in the life cycle of a research project and contrasts these new capabilities with the relatively stable system of scholarly communication, which remains based on publishing in journals, books, and conference proceedings. No framework for the impending "data deluge" exists comparable to that for publishing. Analyzing scholarly practices in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, Borgman compares each discipline's approach to infrastructure issues. In the process, she challenges the many stakeholders in the scholarly infrastructure--scholars, publishers, libraries, funding agencies, and others--to look beyond their own domains to address the interaction of technical, legal, economic, social, political, and disciplinary concerns. Scholarship in the Digital Age will provoke a stimulating conversation among all who depend on a rich and robust scholarly environment.
